I know it’s a bazaar title but as this is linked to my new website, dedicated to following World War 2 mountain escape routes across the alps, I thought i’d try and link other aspects of mountain life to the theme.
So first up is Chicory. These lovely blue flowers can currently be found in most mountain valleys in the Alps and Apennines. The flowers open in the mornings and close again later in the day or if it rains. It’s part of the daisy family and during the second world war it’s fleshy root could be used as a vegetable or roasted to produce a coffee substitute. Will try it later and report back
